Pre-season championship favorite Kevin Eriksson finally delivered on the promise he’s shown all season by winning the Nitro Stampede in Calgary.
After following brother and Olsbergs MSE team-mate Oliver home at the previous event in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, expectations were high for the second Canadian round.
Twice a finalist in the adjusted double Battle Bracket format devised just for the Calgary weekend, Kevin Eriksson went on to dominate the showpiece four-car Superfinal, making the best getaway of anyone before crossing the finish line over 15 and a half seconds ahead of his nearest rival.
“I really wanted to win today,” he said after the final. “I don’t know why it hasn’t really been my year, I haven’t really been focused enough but I promised myself going into this new year that I’m going to be focused, I’m going to be fast.
“Oliver won last race, me P2, I win now, so just great feelings for the team.”
After missing the opening two rounds of the season due to injury, Eriksson has been out of championship contention for much of the season, but that hasn’t deterred him from ending the season on a high.
“The whole field can win a race, [and] this was for sure anyone’s win to get,” Eriksson said. “It’s such a fun championship to be a part of. It’s a shame that I missed part of the season with my accident there, but I’m going to finish it strong.”
